November's Lunch Time Concert Christopher Drew
AUTUMN ORGAN RECITAL
The audience of over 100 people enjoyed an excellent Organ Recital at the Autumn Lunch-time Concert at St Eligius Church, Arborfield Green on Thursday, 7 November 2019.
Organist Christopher Dew grew up in Cape Town where his musical development commenced with singing in the church choir and progressed to becoming organist at age 16 and later choirmaster! He taught music in high schools and privately, and directed and conducted the Cape Town Gilbert and Sullivan Society in the 1970s.
Christopher was trained privately as a piano teacher. During the 1980s, holding two degrees in Musicology, he was Lecturer in Music at the Faculty of Music, University of Cape Town. Since 1991, Christopher has focussed on piano playing and private teaching, although the organ has continued to feature - Director of Music at Christ Church, Crookham in the 1990s and recitalist at local churches and Romsey Abbey. We were delighted to welcome him back!
The choice of programme was excellent, with great variety. Leon Boëllmann's Gothic Suite, Op.25 made for a fantastic entry! Christopher expressed the majesty, inspiration, tender devotion and drama in the various movements. Wachet auf, ruft uns die Stimme (Sleepers, awake) BWV 645, from the Six Schübler Chorale Preludes by J S Bach was simply beautiful and most appropriate as we near the Advent season. Samuel Wesley's Air and Gavotte displayed melodiousness and bright and cheerful liveliness in the two pieces. Cantilena Romantica, from Four Original Pieces, Op. 101, No. 4 by Thomas Dunhill was smooth, melodious and truly romantic! Carillon-Sortie by Henri Mullet was a fabulous ending to a most enjoyable Organ Recital and a joyous occasion!
The performance was hugely enjoyed by the audience who expressed their appreciation with prolonged applause. The funds raised in charitable donations go towards the maintenance of St Eligius Church.
